Part Two
Native tales and folk fables form the basis for a student centred exploration of sound and rhythm. The children's new spool-drum plus a variety of other easily made instruments are used to express the atmosphere, emotion and conflict of the story. Be it the patter of falling rain or the rumble of thunder, all things have rhythm at their core. The children animate the story, learning various ways to play their new spool-drum, including the musical fundamentals of dynamics, pulse and call & answer. The workshop is adaptable to specific curriculum in your school and can be used as the basis for student presentations.

The Ritual Of Playing The Drum
Children get very excited with the idea of composing with and playing their own personal drums. Peter Jarvis has created over 2000 drums over the past few years with children in the schools and at large festivals. He has lead workshops for the Toronto Board of Education and The Mississauga International Children's Festival.
