[music playing] Lacharity: Little exotic music, Friday, final half hour, you can pretty well be sure we're talking to Alvina Ruprecht. Good morning Alvina. Ruprecht: Good morning John. Well actually that's a very small sampling of sound from a group called the Subtonic Monks. Subtonic, that's it...a group from Toronto that you can see now tonight, and tomorrow at the Tournesal, which is a new late night club at the NAC. That' the club you enter directly from Elgin Street. This group improvises musical performances based on traditional instruments from around the world, many percussion instruments, but they have reconstructed these instruments out of recycled material to give them a post modern flavour, plus they do a lot of physical and visually creative stuff with projected images, mime, dance movements, bodies stretched out behind elastic sheets and so on, and the other night when I was there, the audience was absolutely carried away to the sounds of stove pipe, the wooden blocks, the whistles, the bottles full of pebbles, the bassoon, the piccolo, the two electric guitars, a digiridoo with special modifications, and a meditation bowl that hums. This is a mixture of new age healing sounds, of world beat, of performance art and anything else extraordinary, so go and hear them,. The Subtonic Monks, a very talented group playing at the Tournesal, they start a 11:00, that's tonight and tomorrow and get there early, there's not much space, but it's all free. End of segment.

Letters from clients
Dear Subtonic Monks.
Thank you so much for your wonderful workshop and presentation at our third annual elementary school Peace Rally. The kids haven't stopped talking about it and I have received lots of credit for bringing in The Monks!
I would be happy to provide a reference any time. The Subtonic Monks are magnificent! You managed to hold the attention of 500 kids (3rd through 6th graders) for an entire day. They made the drums, learned the rythyms and the beats, wrote peace poems and were entertained and participated in the magic of the Subtonic cycle. All in all a spectacular day which culminated in a gigantic parade of all the students with their drums, the Cycle and The Monks, dancing, drumming and parading their way along under your vibrant direction. It was our best Peace Rally ever!

On the practical side, The Monks were well organized, flexible, calm and improvisational when we needed it. They are a diverse group of very talented individuals- and they are lots of fun! I really enjoyed the time we spent together. I can't imagine any group- of any age- that wouldn't love them.

Dear Peter,
On behalf of the Canadian Consulate General and the Canadian Tourism Commission I want to thank the Subtonic Monks for producing two superb shows to entertain and engage our most appreciative audiences at Tall Ships Chicago 2000 which was attended by 660,000 visitors over the Labor Day weekend.
It was a pleasure indeed to work with you and your wonderful company. The Subtonic Monks were a phenomenal success at the festival, beyond our expectations! With your passionate, energetic and profound performances the Monks made the Consulate very proud to present them during "Canadian Cultural Celebrations" at the Tall Ships Festival. The Subtonic Monks are truly a unique and wildly talented musical group with extraordinary creativity. Thank you for giving Toronto's American sister city of Chicago an unforgettable and uniquely Canadian musical experience. Everyone loved the Subtonic Cycle as well as the monks.
We would like to offer our strong recommendation of Subtonic Monks to any presenter who is looking for a fascinating, moving and eclectic show guaranteed to capture audiences anywhere.
Linda Poole, Cultural & Academic Officer. Canadian Consulate General, Chicago.
